  Fish on the run

Migratory fish 101

It's not easy being a sucker...

It's spring, and time to head back to your "home" stream to spawn. But, for Great Lakes migratory fish, there are 275,000 obstacles in their way. Researchers at the UW-Madison Center for Limnology are working to restore connectivity, eliminate barriers and get fish (like the white sucker) back on the run.

Fish move!

The UW-Madison's Center for Limnology is working to help reduce barriers to fish migrations, and keep healthy populations "on the move" around the world.

The story of the lake sturgeon

Our friends at the River Alliance of Wisconsin produced this fun, animated video explaining why lake sturgeon head upstream to spawn, what keeps them from achieving those dreams, and how the Menominee River Fish Passage Partnership lends a hand.

How do we study fish migrations?

Just thought we’d share this excellent little animation explaining what an otolith is and what one can tell fisheries researchers. Credit goes to the folks at “From Reefs to Rivers,” Florida’s Fisheries blog for this little tidbit of science communication.
